Reflection

5 weeks ago, I took part in this class of media and society. Right now, I already have a better understanding on how media affects our society. To be honest, previously, I have known that I am a heavy addict to digital products like my phones. For instance, I would spend 3-4 hours a day on social media platform like Twitter and Facebook. After learning this class, I learn more.

For one thing, with the huge number of users, I understand that social media has become a great platform for advertisement. For instance, when I am using Twitter or Facebook, advertisements of different kinds of products will pop up, which attract my attention. More importantly, we understand some of the future trend of these platforms, like advertisers might add short videos into these platforms to appeal to more people. “Marketers will make the best of social media to grab fortune”(Mariia, R, Oleg, P & Vladimir, P 2016).

For another, I understand that the information on the social media can be fake, which misleads people. “Numerous fake information exist on social media”(Moravec, P, Minas, R & Dennis, A R 2018). Under this circumstance, it is important to have a critical thinking to analyze whether this information is correct or not. Right now, whenever I receive information from the social media, I will first analyze it before spreading it. A typical example is that the past President, Donald Trump, once claimed COVID-19 as Chinese virus. I would not believe that until there is evidence.

To summarize, I have learned a lot through this class until now. My writing is improved as well since I have to write every week to reflect my thinking. I believe that in the near future. I will be able to grasp more knowledge and skills from this class.

Where you think this form of media will go in the future?

Changes happen every day and the form of media I choose, like Facebook, Twitter and so on will also keep up with the trend. In the near future, I believe that there will be several changes on them.

For one thing, short video will be added into this form of media to attract users. In the era where ‘population flow’ is the king, short video is prevalent. It is easy for people to understand and quick for them to absorb. Under this case, it attracts millions or billions people a day. For instance, Tik Tok, as the ‘King’ in the field of short video, has the largest active viewers, who create a large amount of business value. Therefore, the form of media I choose will definitely add the short video in them so that they can attract some of the users from Tik Tok and other short video apps.

For another, it will encourage more foreign trade promotion. It should be noted that Facebook and Twitter are mainly used by people from English speaking countries, which are mostly developed nations like America, England and so on. Those who want to share these markets will definitely make the best use of these platforms. In order to earn more, these platforms will also encourage them to advertise by charging a certain amount of advertisement fee. Therefore, in the future, users might be able to see more advertisements on these platforms.

To summarize, more advertisements and addition of the short videos will be the future trend for the media form I choose.

What kind of content I like to consume on social media like Twitter?

It should be noted that there are different kinds of contents on social media like Twitter, Facebook and so on. Normally speaking, I will pay close attention to below three types of contents.

First of all, I will consume the gossip, which belongs to entertainment. This content takes up 20% of my time on social media. Frankly speaking, I have my own idols, like Robert Downey, Christopher Nolan and so on. Therefore, sometimes, I will take a closer look at their news. Of course, there are some other gossips that I am interested in, such as the love line among the Hollywood stars. This can make me relaxing from the academic pressure.

Secondly, I will consume the content of shopping discount, which accounts for another 20% of my time. As a student, I have to save money, as a result of which the shopping discount will be helpful. Whenever I notice the shopping discount, I will go for the commodities to see if I need it. For me, this social media is like Pin Duoduo in China.

Finally, brand marketing content will make me stay the longest time. I am very excited and happy to see how brands advertise themselves in such a new era when social media is various. When an advertisement impresses me, I will immediately make a research and check if I can apply the knowledge I learn into this case. I believe that this content can be helpful for my study.

To summarize, the above three contents basically are somethings that attract my attention on social media.

How have you noticed advertisers taking advantage of social media?

Due to the huge rate of flow in social media, such as twitter. many advertisers have taken advantage of this platform to promote their products.

The Impact of Social Media on Advertising

To begin with, the easiest way for advertisers is to register an account in ads.twitter.com, in which they can choose the target, product and so on. In this case, the advertisement can be generated automatically and Twitter will post the advertisement to the potential customers automatically. This way is a bit convenient but it requires advertisers to pay a certain amount of advertisement fee. When  search for people on twitter, an advertisement will pop up, which is called a sponsor here (Przemyslaw, J & Sridhar, M 2018, p.1365).

Meanwhile, advertisers will run their own account. For example, for the fashion designer, they might post their works on Twitter. With time going past, they might gain attention and fans. As a result, they can sell their products by putting a link in the Twitter post. Research shows that specific and interesting advertisements can increase the audience’s attention (Beth, F & David, S 2019, p.276).

In this way, they successfully advertise their products. This way is time-consuming because advertisers have to spend a long time on building up an account. But the result will be great once it is successful.

The final way is that advertisers can post short video about their products on Twitter. The video is short but attractive, which is often filmed with celebrities. Through watching these videos, they gain flow and customers.

These three ways are mainly used in Twitter, which can increase sales.

How social media throughout my life?

In the current society, electronic information is thriving and smart phones occupy most of the time.

From the 19th century to the 20th century, people experienced from newspapers, radio, television and then the Internet era now, which includes the social media. Social media has changed the way we communicate, collaborate, and consume. They represent one of the most transformative impacts of information technology on the internal and external business of a company (Sinan, A & Chrysanthos, D & David, G 2009, P.3 and P.6).

According to the statistics, the number of people involved in social media has been tripled from 2000 to 2009. At that time, social media was considered as the latest development. With the number of users increasing, all kinds of information was shared.(Wen-ying Sylvia, C & Yvone M, H &Ellen Burke, B & Richard P, M & Bradford W, H 2009,P10).  I’m no exception as social media has been influencing me constantly. Firstly, the social media of various software make my personality more open-minded. I am more willing to express myself and become more confident on social media. Secondly, social media bring great convenience. Today, almost all communications are done through social media because they have greatly improved the efficiency and it is very convenient and rapid. Thirdly, the existence of Twitter and Instagram, for example, makes the approaches of me acquiring information even more diversified. I have seen numerous different things and people and my mind has been broadened.

Finally, despite the convenience, I find myself excessively dependent on the mobile phone as a network carrier. Moreover, the information on the social network is quite distinctive and seductive.

Social Media

As everyone knows social media is everywhere, such as facebook, instagram and twitter. Currently, 3 billion people use online social media, accounting for about 40% of the global population. According to some research reports, everyone spends an average of two hours a day sharing, liking, tweeting and updating posts on these platforms. That means 500000 tweets and photos are shared every minute around the world. Social media is around us all the time. In 2011, we analyzed the data through recruitment and data collection, and finally concluded that using online social media can gain more knowledge about physical exercise. (Cavallo, DN & Tate, DF & Ries, AV & Brown, JD & DeVellis , RF & Ammerman , AS 2012 p.532) I think it’s not only about physical exercise, but also about breaking news. For me, I’ve made a lot of new friends with instagram, and I’ve got some friends’ knowledge by sharing my daily photos and my experiences. But social media has more than just benefits. A large number of studies have shown that social media has a negative impact on young people’s lives, especially cyber bullying and its associated negative mental health outcomes.(Mcloughhlin, L & Spears, B and Taddeo, C 2018 p.17)Because any social networking site spreads very fast, some people will publish some fake story. So social media is good and bad, and each of us should use it in the right way, responsible and friendly

Television

A television is a device that uses electronic technology to transmit moving image pictures and audio signals according to the visual persistence characteristics and visual psychology of the human eye, that is, a television receiver. It is also an important broadcast and video communication tool. The basic system of the television is composed of three parts: camera, transmission and development. The television was first invented by the British engineer John Logie Baird in 1925. The working process of the television system is to send the fine parts of the scene according to the brightness and After the chrominance is converted into an electrical signal, it is transmitted sequentially. At the receiving end, the brightness and chrominance of the fine parts are displayed according to the corresponding geometric position to reproduce the entire original image. The earliest origin of televisions was in 1929. With the development of science and technology, the definition of televisions became clearer and clearer. People used to view news, movies, and also gave children education classes. With the advancement of modern science and technology and the continuous improvement of people’s economic living standards, the penetration of mobile phones and computers is getting higher and higher. TVs are used less and less in people’s homes, and more and more time is spent on computers and mobile phones. In my home TV are used by elders such as parents, grandparents. Television is still essential for a family.

How does the media change? What influenced the change?

Image result for How this form of media has evolved over the years

With the changes of the times, technology is slowly

changing. From print media to radio to Television to internet.

With the advancement of people’s thinking, technology is developed year after year. From the most primitive people using correspondence to the current Internet world and the media age, we can send messages to people who want them anytime and anywhere, and we can use blogs to write our daily mood and share interesting things happening. The information age provided by the current media era is increasing, and people are increasingly relying on the information provided by the current media age to understand the changing social dynamics.

The new media has formed an interactive relationship between people and society, and even transferred the real relationship to a new media platform and expanded it, which makes people’s dependence on the social media platform more intense.

From the very beginning, people paid attention to things through the daily news newspapers to the current TV news network. The TV news network has gradually replaced the newspapers, because TV news is more convenient and it expresses what people want to express more vividly. In my opinion, the evolution of the media form is through the efforts of scientific and technical personnel and the progress of ideas. The emergence of new media has greatly affected the traditional media industry. Both of them are competitive, but the emergence of new media has also promoted the old media. Development and change, as time goes by, new media and old media will slowly combine to achieve cooperation to achieve better benefits.
